Ban Pecah

Ban Pecah lies 4.6 km from the farmstay, on the coast between the mukim of Kuala Kurau and Tanjong Piandang in the Krian district. It is one of Perak's more unusual places to stand and look at, and the tourism authorities have added it to the state's list of places worth visiting.

What you see

The sea meets the rice fields along a paved coastal road, with heavy stone barriers running the length of the shore. The effect is striking: fields on one side, open water on the other, and the breakwater between them.

How it came to be

In the early 1960s Ban Pecah was simply a village of farmers and fishermen, and for the people living there its story is a sad one. Year after year the sea took their land. Erosion brought down paddy fields and houses, and the waves carried them away. It went on into the 1970s.

They fought back by building walls of earth, sand and stone. Those walls are the *ban* the place is named after.

What nobody expected was that people would come to look. Locals arrived at weekends, partly out of sympathy and partly to see something they had never seen before. Warungs opened. What had been a disaster site became, gradually, the district's recreation spot, and for a while people called it Ban Runtuh — the collapsed embankment.

By the 1980s a concrete barrier some 10 km long had been built from Tanjung Piandang round to Kuala Kurau, and the erosion eased. Ban Pecah settled into what it is now.

The orphans' curse

There is an older explanation for what happened here, and it has been told since the 1960s.

Two orphaned children were left an inheritance, held in trust by their uncle. He never honoured the agreement. The children were denied what was theirs, left to fend for themselves, and eventually left the area altogether. As they went, so the story goes, they prayed that the injustice would be repaid. What followed — the sea rising and taking the land year after year — was said to be the answer to that prayer.

Whether you take the legend or the coastal geology, the place has a weight to it.

Fishing

Anglers come here for the shore fishing, and competitions with prizes running into thousands of ringgit are held along this stretch. Videos of what people pull out of the water have brought plenty more down to try their luck.

Facilities

Ban Pecah was upgraded during Visit Perak Year 2024, with better amenities for visitors.
