Bird Watching at Kuala Gula

The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary sits 12 km from the farmstay. It was set up in 1970 by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to protect resident and migratory birds, and it has since won Best Tourist Attraction (Natural Attraction) at the Malaysia Tourism Awards.

Why the birds come here

The mudflats are a refuelling stop for birds moving between the northern and southern hemispheres. Around 200,000 birds pass through each year, arriving from as far as Siberia, Kazakhstan, Japan, China and Mongolia.

When to go

September to April is the season. In those months Kuala Gula holds about 50 species from eight families, among them the Milky Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Whimbrel, Lesser Golden Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Terek Sandpiper, and the Great, Little and Intermediate Egrets.
