A Different Kind of Malaysian Getaway

Planning a trip to Malaysia and looking for somewhere that still feels like the real thing? Kurau Inn sits in a working village among the rice fields of Perak, an hour from Penang and a long way from anything resembling a resort strip.

Where we are

About an hour's drive from Penang International Airport, roughly 65 km. Close enough to be easy, far enough to feel like you have properly left the city.

The Kurau River is a kilometre away. The coast at Ban Pecah is four.

Why here

The farmstay is surrounded by active rice fields, so what you see out of the window changes with the season: flooded and mirror-still, deep green, then gold before the harvest. Sea breezes come in off the coast, and both the sunrise and the sunset over the fields are worth setting an alarm for.

For birdwatchers

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is 12 km away, and it is one of the better spots in the country for both resident and migratory species. The season runs September to April, when roughly 200,000 birds pass through.

Ban Pecah

Four kilometres from us, Ban Pecah is where the sea meets the rice fields along a stone breakwater. It has become one of Perak's better-known spots, particularly at sunset. Take one of our bicycles and ride out — hire is a maximum of RM10 for your entire stay.

Fishing

There is a pond on the property you are welcome to use. For something more ambitious, head to Ban Pecah, or hire a boat and go out to sea. We run guided fishing packages if you would rather have someone who knows the water with you.

Out on the river

A river cruise takes you through the fishing villages along the Kurau River, with a stop at a sea bass cage where you can feed the fish. It runs about 45 minutes.

Further afield, Orang Utan Island and the fireflies at Kampung Dew are both around 35 to 40 km away, and each makes a good half day.

Getting here

From Penang International Airport, take a Grab straight to us, or catch the train and get off at Parit Buntar station, then Grab or taxi from there.
